The Barwon Women’s and Children’s project will provide new and refurbished facilities to accommodate expansion in Barwon Health’s women’s and children’s services. Built within the University Hospital Geelong precinct, it will provide world-class women’s health, maternity and paediatric facilities and deliver additional capacity to ensure families in Geelong and surrounding communities can continue to access the very best care, close to home.
Over the next five years, the updates from the project team below will keep you informed on progress.

Pharmacy loading dock closure 7 Nov
From 7 November the Pharmacy loading dock will permanently close. From 7 November a temporary drop off area for Pharmacy deliveries will be established via the helipad car park boom gate in Myers St. This is while the main UHG loading dock’s capacity upgrades take place. Once these are complete the Pharmacy deliveries will be permanently moved to the main loading dock. See map below. Emergency access to Swanston Centre also via helipad car park boom gate on Myers St.
Works have begun on the Endoscopy and Day Procedure Hub. Entry to the Youang Surgery Centre will temporarily change to rear access via Argyle Street, while works begin on the Endoscopy and Day Procedure Hub.
This project is making way for the commencement of the Barwon Women’s and Children’s project and will enable Barwon Health to relocate services from the Gretta Volum Centre, clearing the way for it to be demolished in early 2025 as part of the Barwon Women’s and Children’s project.
The necessary construction works are currently forecast to occur between March 2024 and late-March 2025.
The main entrance of the Youang Surgery Centre on Bellerine Street will be closed from 4 April 2024.
Patients and staff needing to access the Youang Surgery Centre are advised that they will need to access the centre via an alternative entry.
An alternative patient drop-off spot, entry and accessible pedestrian access will be available from the rear of the centre via Argyle Street.
In addition to the main entrance disruption, it’s important to understand there will be some noise and vibrations.
These disruptions are expected to be most pronounced during the initial few months of the project, specifically during the demolition and structure works.
Please rest assured that our primary concern remains the safety and well-being of our patients, staff, and visitors.
We are taking all necessary precautions to minimise the impact of these disruptions and ensure that patient care remains our top priority throughout the construction process.
We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during the project works.
