To support construction of the new Barwon Women’s and Children’s, multiple tower cranes will be installed on the construction site. The first tower crane will arrive in late July, with all cranes expected to be in place by the end of August.
What to expect
Mobile cranes will be used to assemble the tower cranes on site. There may be some localised noise and vibrations while assembly occurs.
Some works may take place outside of usual work hours (7am to 5pm) on some Saturdays and Sundays.
The tower cranes will be in place for up to 20 months while we deliver the new Barwon Women’s and Children’s.
All cranes will have safety lights on the crane jibs, which may be visible from neighbouring properties.
When not in operation, the cranes will ‘weathervane’, which means they will rotate dependant on wind direction.
Traffic impacts
The cranes will be delivered in parts with traffic management in place to ensure the safety of road users, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The cranes will be transported to site from Monday 28 July and throughout August. Trucks will access the site via Bellerine Street and Myers Street and lane closures will be in place to ensure public safety.
Please be aware, Myers Street will be closed between Bellerine Street and Swanston Street from 6am Monday 28 July to 7pm Tuesday 29 July.
Over the coming weeks, additional closures will be in place:
- Temporary closure of Myers Street between Bellerine Street and Swanston Street.
- Temporary closure of partial lane on Bellerine Street (the main hospital entrance side) from just after the main entry to the hospital to Myers Street.
Variable message signs (VMS) will be place around the site displaying exact lane closure dates. Please remain alert around the construction site and follow any signage in place.
From time to time, pedestrian diversions may be in place to ensure community safety. These diversions will be wheelchair-accessible and clear signed at entry and exit points.
Updates to parking
Occasionally during construction, we will need to use car spaces to secure the site perimeter and facilitate safe construction. During crane installation the following updates to parking will be in place:
- On Bellerine Street between Myers Street and Ryrie Street, one row of 11 parking spaces will be unavailable for public use.
- On Myers Street between Bellerine Street and Swanston Street 66 parking spaces will be unavailable for public use.
